What is hay fever?

Hay fever is a common form of allergic reaction. It is also known as allergic rhinitis where rhinitis comes from ‘rhino’ meaning nose and ‘itis’ meaning inflammatory. Hay fever in layman’s terms can be described as inflammation of the nose caused by an allergic reaction. The other parts of the body affected by hay fever include eyes, sinuses, throat and ears. Many times hay fever is mistaken for common cold because it is marked by cold like symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, congestion and sinus pressure. However, unlike cold which is caused by a virus, hay fever is caused by an allergic response to indoor or outdoor airborne allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. In some people hay fever may also be triggered by pollution such as cigarette smoke and car exhaust fumes.

There are two categories of hay fever or allergic rhinitis –
• Seasonal hay fever – A large number of people are affected by seasonal hay fever that occurs during spring, summer, and in early fall mainly because of the high levels of pollens present in the atmosphere during these seasons.
• Perennial hay fever – People who experience hay fever all year round are said to be suffering from perennial hay fever.

Hay fever symptoms

Hay fever symptoms vary from person to person. While some people are fortunate to have only mild symptoms that do not last long, some hay fever victims are severely affected and show symptoms every day during the pollen season. In such cases, people may have difficulty attending school or work.
• Common hay fever symptoms include – stuffy or runny nose, itchy nose, throat, or ear canals, sneezing, watery red eyes and ear congestion.
• Less common hay fever symptoms include – inability to taste or smell food, ‘nasal’ voice, face pain, sweats, and headache.
• Asthma symptoms – some people may also experience shortness of breath, especially with exercise or exertion, coughing and wheezing. Symptoms can worsen in people who already have asthma.

Hay fever is an annoying condition that nearly 30% of Americans suffer from. It’s not serious but its symptoms can cause plenty of discomfort and inconvenience. It’s also not something you should treat on your own, especially if you’re basing your self-diagnosis on perceived symptoms alone. You’ll need a good hay fever doctor to help you manage and treat this condition. Here are ways on how to find one:

Look for a specialist
Hay fever is actually a type of rhinitis that results from an allergic reaction to pollens. It’s seasonal, which means you will suffer from it only on certain times of the year and usually during the same season. The allergic reaction comes as a result of inhaling airborne pollens. It then causes symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and runny nose.

If you have been referring your medical problems to a general practitioner, then you might want to find a doctor who specializes in allergies. These doctors are referred to as allergists and they are better trained than a general practitioner in diagnosing and treating your hay fever. Do this if your symptoms are especially bad.

Not every allergist will advertise on the Yellow Pages but it won’t hurt if you checked the listings. You could also find hay fever doctors in trade journals or through local m

On average, 20 percent of individuals in the United States suffer from hayfever. Hayfever is caused by an allergic reaction mainly to different forms of pollen and ragweed. Hayfever has different effects on every individual depending on how severely they suffer from allergies. Some individuals may experience slight discomfort whereas the pain can be practically unbearable for others. So how do you know if you have hayfever? The following is a list of categories to consider in order to determine whether or not you are suffering from hayfever:

When Does It Occur?

Hayfever is a seasonal reaction which often starts in early June and continues through to the middle of July. Whenever pollen and ragweed season begins (usually near the beginning of seasons) is when you are most likely to start experiencing the symptoms.

Symptoms

There are many symptoms which may indicate you are suffering from hayfever. The most common symptoms are listed in categories below:

1. Eyes – An individual suffering from hayfever will experience many difficulties with their eyes. Itchy, watery eyes are an indication of hayfever as well as swollen red eyes. Hay fever can be miserable. For a start it comes every year. And, although it isn’t serious, it does inconvenience you. Sneezing in spasms in public is embarrassing. Itchy eyes can be wearing. I'm 21 years old and I'm living in Australia so it's approaching summer here, and this is the first time that I've ever really had bad hay fever, despite having grown up on a farm and being around pollens all my life.

My sinuses are killing me and I want to know what I can do to make them stop hurting, preferably without using any drugs. I would also prefer it if you could suggest something I can do without applying heat because, like I said, it's nearly summer here and it's quite hot. I'm willing to take these paths if I have to but I'm looking for an alternative.

I'm sure it's hay fever because there's a tree in the backyard that's shedding a lot of pollen at the moment and my sinuses get much worse when I'm around it.

Is this Hay Fever or a cold?

Question: I dread the spring because I get such terrible hay fever. What do you suggest I do to prevent and/or treat it?

Answer: Nature works in cycles. And since we are part of nature, we are affected by seasonal disorders, some natural and some man-made. You only have to look at the adverts on TV to see what problems are around. Cold and flu products predominate in autumn and winter; treatments for diarrhoea and tummy upsets in the summer months, and antihistamines and other anti-allergic drugs in the spring and summer months, when any people suffer hay fever.

As flowers blossom in the spring and summer, the pollination season arrives. The pollen of some plants is transported by bees and butterflies, while other plants (especially trees, grasses and agricultural crops) throw pollen in the air to spread it. This is when you and many other susceptible people suffer from hay fever, medically called seasonal allergic rhinitis. Like all allergies, this doesn’t affect everyone. In many cases, hay fever and its related allergies, asthma and eczema, run in families; other possible contributory factors include trauma at birth and whether or not you were breast-fed as a baby.

The immune system, the body’s defensive mechanism, is designed to detect, and repel foreign bodies such as bacteria. As soon as aliens enter, the white blood cells (lymphocytes) act as immigration officers and try to arrest the invaders by sending a message to the immune system to develop antibodies (small protein particles) to neutralize them and stop them multiplying. Non-living particles, such as pollen, dust, chemicals, petrol or paint fumes, are a different matter.

Confronted with these dead particles, the immune system becomes helpless and can’t produce antibodies. But these invaders can interfere with the normal functioning of the body. So the body mounts a different defensive strategy and tries to get rid of them at the places where they enter. The blood cells release histamine to dilate blood vessels so that they can produce excess fluids to wash away the particles or pollen – that’s why with hay fever your eyes and nose water. Sneezing is another reflex, to try to blow the particles away.

Although this allergic reaction is the body’s natural way of dealing with the problem, the symptoms are bothersome. Antihistamine will block the reaction for a few hours, but this does nothing to solve the underlying problem. However, there is a smart way of getting the body not to react violently and that is to desensitise it. That means making the body immune to these particles, or raising the threshold so that the body goes on to red alert only when the pollen count is really high (nine plus).

Summer is a time of year to look forward to, associated with long, lazy days or exciting vacations with friends and family. However, it also has its downside, like bad action movies, exacerbated heat due to global warming, and hay fever. For many sufferers, hay fever is something that keeps coming back, year after year. It is not a matter of curing the symptoms. One may only choose to bear them nobly, or be a whiner.

Alright, perhaps that was a little melodramatic. There are several ways to either minimize exposure or treat the symptoms of hay fever.

One might try to take treatments to suppress ones own immune responses (since these responses, not the allergen, are the direct cause of the symptoms), but this might leave one vulnerable to far more serious health problems. Of course, there are often further rounds of testing or other similar measures to eliminate these kinds of false positives, but setting off the preliminary alarms can cause a major hassle, all the same.

Also, anti-allergy medication, which, besides being expensive, can make you sleepy or, in more serious cases, give you polyps in your nose. Though the overall trend in medicine is to resort to medication, there is such a concept as too much of a good thing. It might be better for you to try other treatments, instead.

Besides bringing out the pills and syrups, one might try to learn breathing techniques to avoid hay fever. You can train yourself to breathe through your nose and never your mouth, since the nose has better filtering mechanisms that are more likely to block allergens. In addition, people can learn to control their breathing when they are around sources of hay fever-inducing pollen.

Proper breathing might help you avoid hay fever, but it cannot guarantee 100% effective protection, especially if you live in a place with many “dangerous” plants, or are an especially sensitive individual whose system reacts to the slightest trace of inhaled pollen. Therefore, we should also discuss what to do if and when you actually do get hay fever.

You can try to use special cough breathing techniques so that you will not choke on air while coughing, or end up with overlong coughing bouts that irritate your throat. Coughing with phlegm does not hurt as much as dry cough, but it can still damage your throat if you do it too often. For some patients, slow, shallow breaths can help calm a cough. In general, your research should target your upper airway breathing passages, so that you will not end up using a breathing technique that makes you swallow or inhale your own mucus. Sinusitis (inflammation of the sinus cavities) and nasal polyps (small outgrowths of the mucous membrane of the nose) may develop. Secondary infections of the ear, larynx and bronchial tubes may occur. Also, prolonged year-round nasal stuffiness and mouth breathing may lead to facial bone growth changes in children. Surprisingly, many parents realize that their children have asthma before their physicians do.

An accurate diagnosis is key to helping determine the appropriate individualized treatment program. Physicians who specialize in allergies and immunology have special skills in the

An allergy and asthma specialist can detect and determine the environmental elements (pollens, molds, dust mites, animal danders, workplace chemicals) which may be the cause of a patient’s asthmatic condition. A careful physical examination, medical history, selective allergy skill testing and lung function studies are typically conducted. On occasion, blood tests, home and workplace evaluations, and x-rays of the sinuses and lungs are required.

Asthma is a more complex disease than hay fever; involving a reversible constriction of the muscles lining the human airways. Asthma is more often associated with allergy immune cells and can get progressively worse reaching life-threatening stages if not properly controlled. It can be treated more effectively when it is diagnosed early. The best asthma therapy of all is avoidance of those things which produce asthma symptoms. These include allergens such as house dust mites, pets and irritants, such as tobacco smoke and chemical fumes.
